A haunting photograph of African migrants on a Djibouti beach holding their mobile phones up to the sky to capture a signal so they can call home has won the World Press Photo of the Year 2014 award for U.S. photographer John Stanmeyer.
The prestigious prizes were announced at a press conference in Amsterdam on February 14.
Organizers said almost 100,000 images by more than 5,750 photographers from 132 countries were submitted and judged anonymously.
The list of winners
includes photographers from Serbia, Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.
Top winner Stanmeyer will be awarded a cash prize of 10,000 euros ($14,000) and a camera during a ceremony in Amsterdam in April.
