Representing Ukraine, Jamala is the first-ever Crimean Tatar singer to compete at the Eurovision Song Contest. Before qualifying for the May 12 semifinals in Stockholm, Jamala said her performance symbolizes the need for a revival in Ukraine and Crimea. Titled 1944, her song is about Josef Stalin's deportation of Crimean Tatars to Central Asia. (RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service)
