Hungary's parliament approved a law which could force a university founded by U.S. billionaire George Soros to leave the country. The measure, passed on April 4, requires foreign universities in Hungary to have a campus and provide similar courses in their country of origin. Many in Hungary and abroad said the law was written specifically to oust Budapest's Central European University, which the nationalist government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban sees as a bastion of the liberal opposition. After the vote, the CEU vice-president, Liviu Matei, told reporters that the move was an unprecedented attack on academic freedom in an EU country. (Reuters)
