Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto head of state of Burma, also known as Myanmar, condemned human rights violations in Rakhine state, but insisted that more than half of the country's Rohingya Muslim population has not been affected by a military operation that followed insurgent attacks. Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, gave a televised speech in the capital Naypyidaw on September 19 after international criticism of her failure to address alleged ethnic cleansing directed toward Rohingya. Some 400,000 Rohingya refugees have fled their homes, mostly into neighboring Bangladesh. (AP)
