Activists To Sue Minsk Authorities Over Valentine's Day Row

MINSK -- Activists from Belarus's Youth Front movement told RFE/RL's Belarus Service that they intend to sue Minsk city authorities for not approving their request to hold a public celebration of Valentine's Day.

Early this month, the Youth Front officially asked Minsk officials for permission to hold a concert in Yakub Kolas Square devoted to Valentine's Day.

According to the law, a decision by Minsk authorities should be given at least five days before the planned day, in this case February 14. However, the refusal did not come until February 11.

The Youth Front leadership told RFE/RL that they will still try to hold their gathering in the square according to plan since the Minsk authorities answered them so late.
