YEREVAN (RFE/RL) -- A major Armenian opposition group led by former Foreign Minister Raffi Hovannisian announced on March 18 that it will not back former President Levon Ter-Petrosian's candidacy for Yerevan mayor in the May 31 municipal elections.

The Zharangutyun (Heritage) opposition group's spokesman, Hovsep Khurshudian, told RFE/RL's Armenian Service that a "large segment of the electorate" would not vote for Ter-Petrosian and expressed regret that the Zharangutyun was not included in the selection process held by 18 other opposition groups.

Khurshudian told RFE/RL that "we should have made that decision together."

Zharangutyun, which supported Ter-Petrosian in last year's presidential election and which is the only opposition group in parliament, said it prefers to back a young leader like parliament member Armen Maritorsian.
