Bashkir Youth Activists Want FSB Chief To Resign

UFA, Bashkortostan -- The Union of Bashkir Youth is demanding the resignation of the local Federal Security Service (FSB) chief, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Activists of the organization said on February 15 that Major General Viktor Palagin should resign after the local FSB office imposed strict control over the activities of several nationalist and youth organizations in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan.

The Union of Bashkir Youth and other youth organizations in Bashkortostan sent an open letter to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev earlier this year expressing their willingness to "protect Bashkortostan's president, Murtaza Rakhimov, in case of a conflict with the Kremlin."

The conflict comes amid disagreements between Bashkortostan's republican leadership and the Kremlin over Moscow's appointment of politicians from other Russian regions to key government jobs in Bashkortostan.
