Belarusian Activists Fined For Advertising Valentine's Parade

MINSK, February 13, 2009 (RFE/RL) -- Belarusian Youth Front movement leaders Zmitr Dashkevich and Mikola Demidenka have been tried and fined by a court in Minsk.

The two told RFE/RL's Belarus Service that police arrested them on February 12 and found flyers advertising the front's Valentine Day's march in their possession.

Minsk's Lenin District Court found the two activists guilty of advertising an unsanctioned mass gathering and fined them.

The Youth Front plans to celebrate a Valentine’s Day "love" march to EU embassies and a concert on February 14.

Minsk city authorities have officially forbidden the holding of the event.

Youth Front leaders told RFE/RL that the celebrations will take place as planned despite city officials' decision.
