Deadly Floods Hit Eastern Georgia

TBILISI -- Heavy rains and melting snow have caused floods and landslides in parts of eastern Georgia, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.

A massive landslide killed at least one person in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti district. Three others are missing. Rescue work is under way. Several villages in the province of Kakhetia were evacuated after the level of water in the Cheremo reservoir rose abruptly.

Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili is personally leading the rescue operations. Georgian Army units are also taking part in the rescue operations.
