ASTANA -- Public transportation was suspended today in the Kazakh capital, Astana, and four northern regions due to extreme cold, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
Kazakhstan's Emergency Situations Ministry announced that all public transportation in Astana is suspended, along with routes between the capital and other regions of the country.
Schools were also closed in Astana and several other cities.
The temperature in the regions fell as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius in recent days.
All transportation services were also suspended in the East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, and Qaraghandy oblasts.
Astana officials also temporarily banned vehicles that use diesel fuel.
