Human Rights Activists Welcome Engagement Between U.S., Iran

Iranian human rights activists are welcoming reports of efforts by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama that seeks to renew diplomatic relations with Tehran.

Activist and journalist Saman Rasulpur told RFE/RL's Radio Farda, "Please talk to Tehran.... Don't let the abuse of human rights in Iran become a bargaining chip [for the nuclear issue]."

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and member of the antidiscrimination One Million Signatures Campaign, told RFE/RL that normalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries would decrease the pressure on activists and help them "push forward" on important issues.
