Kazakh Citizen Charged With Human Trafficking In Tajikistan

KHUDJAND, Kazakhstan -- A Kazakh woman has been detained by Tajik police and charged with illegal human trafficking, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Dildar Sabirova, 44, was arrested at a bus station in Tajikistan's north while arranging a trip for 10 Tajik seasonal workers to Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Officials from Tajikistan's state migration service told RFE/RL that Sabirova did not have a license to hire labor migrants for work in Kazakhstan.

Sabirova's arrest is the first case of that kind in Tajikistan.

Meanwhile, experts in Tajikistan say authorities have not properly organized the labor migration system, which has lead ordinary Tajiks to look for alternative ways of finding work abroad.

It is believed that about 1 million Tajik citizens travel to work abroad every year.
