A well-known Kyrgyz rights activist has gone missing en route to an opposition-sponsored rally in the capital, Bishkek, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Aziza Abdrasulova, the chairwoman of the Torch of the Century (Kylym Shamy) human rights center, told RFE/RL that Ravshan Gapirov planned to travel on March 16 from his home in the southern city of Osh to attend a nationwide opposition congress.

Friends of Gapirov planned to send a car with a driver to bring him to Bishkek.

But relatives say Gapirov left the city in an unknown car.

His whereabouts are still unknown and he has not contacted anyone since leaving Osh.
