A conference in the Kyrgyz capital marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Human Rights Declaration today.

Kyrgyz government officials, the Kyrgyz Ombudsman's Office, and human rights organizations took part in the conference's work.

Kyrgyz Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun told RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service that while there have been some improvements in Kyrgyzstan regarding respect for human rights, problems still remain.

He noted the current issue with Kyrgyz authorities halting RFE/RL radio and television broadcasts and BBC radio broadcasts. Akun said those broadcasts should be returned to the air as soon as possible.

NGOs and various media outlets -- including RFE/RL -- received awards from the Kyrgyz Ombudsman's Office for their contributions to the protection of human rights in Kyrgyzstan.
