TSKHINVALI -- The editor of the newspaper "Pozitsiya" (Position) has been arrested in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, RFE/RL's Echo of the Caucasus reports.

Local authorities had been investigating editor Fatima Margieva for alleged illegal possession of weapons and ammunition since last year.

Margieva, who was arrested on Thursday, told RFE/RL that she has begun a hunger strike to protest her arrest, which she said is politically motivated.

She added that "almost every household in South Ossetia owns weapons; I was chosen because of my critical articles about the South Ossetian leadership."

Margieva added that investigators had told her orally about the decision to arrest her. She said they did not show an arrest warrant or any other document related to her arrest.
