Romany-Language Textbook Published For First Time In Ukraine

LUTSK, Ukraine -- The first Romany-language textbook has been published in the northern Ukrainian region of Volyn, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Because the nomadic Roma do not have a written culture, textbook author Serhiy Hrihorichenko had to rely on historical literary materials for the book's vocabulary, which he based on the Cyrillic alphabet.

He told RFE/RL that he hopes the alphabet will make it easier for children to learn their language, which most Roma do not speak.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
