Russian Activist Charged In Police Assault Case

Russian police detain an opposition supporter during the "Day of Wrath" rally in Moscow on November 12.
MOSCOW -- A Moscow court has sanctioned the arrest of an opposition Left Front activist for an alleged attack on a policeman, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Grigory Torbeyev came to Moscow last week to take part in the unsanctioned "Day of Wrath" protest on November 12. Police forcibly dispersed the demonstration and detained several people.

Torbeyev is alleged to have struck police Sergeant Yevgeny Kovalev with a lit torch. Kovalev was hospitalized with a burn wound near his eye.

The court ruled that Torbeyev can be detained for two months. He is being charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.
