Russian Miners Continue Hunger Strike

ROSTOV, Russia -- Miners in the southwestern Russian town of Zverevo are continuing their hunger strike to demand lower rates for housing utilities.

The miners have been on strike since December 4, and six of them have been hospitalized.

The Rostov Governor's press service told RFE/RL's Russian Service that a special working group to assist the hunger strikers has been established.

But Valery Dyakonov, a hunger striker and member of the local city council, told RFE/RL that the working group's goal is to end the hunger strike without meeting strikers' demands. He said the hunger strike will continue until all the protesters' demands are met.
