Prominent Russian human rights defender Arseny Roginsky received Germany's Order of Merit award today in Moscow, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Roginsky, 64, is chairman of the Moscow-based International Memorial Society. He was presented with the prize at the German Embassy by Ambassador Walter Juergen Schmidt.

The embassy said Roginsky was honored for his contribution to the protection of human rights in Russia and the strengthening of German-Russian relations.

The International Memorial Society is a historical and civil rights organization that records and publicizes the Soviet Union's totalitarian past. It also monitors human rights in several former Soviet republics. It was established in 1989.

In November, Russian human rights activist Lyudmila Alekseyeva, the chairwoman of the Moscow Helsinki Group, received the same award.
