Tajiks Arrested For Attack On Russian Soldiers

QURGHON-TEPPA, Tajikistan -- Two people in the southern Tajik province of Khatlon have been detained for attacking Russian soldiers.

The arrest marks the third case of violence between Russians and Tajik citizens this year, police officer Alijon Azizov told RFE/RL's Tajik Service.

He said the Russian soldiers were drunk, and local police have asked the Russian military base to patrol the streets so that soldiers stay on the base at night.

Azizov said the crime was linked to a robbery.

There are some 5,000 Russian soldiers in Tajikistan at three different bases, as well as Russian military advisers on Tajik border areas.
