Tatar Islamic Leader: Obama Will Improve Muslim Relations

KAZAN -- Tatarstan's deputy mufti says he hopes U.S. relations with the Muslim world will improve under President Barack Obama.

Ramil Yunus told RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service that he believes Obama will be able to bring the United States and Muslim countries closer to each other.

Yunus said new developments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and especially in the Palestinian territories should bring good relations between the world's Muslims and the United States.

In his inaugural speech on January 20, Obama said U.S.-Muslim relations would be based on shared interests and mutual respect.
