Turkey Demands Israeli Apology Over Envoy's Treatment

Turkey is demanding an apology from Israel, saying its ambassador to Israel was treated discourteously during a diplomatic meeting over a controversial Turkish television show.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon had attempted to slight Ambassador Oguz Celikkol during a meeting on January 11 to protest against a Turkish television drama that portrayed Israeli agents as child abductors.

In the meeting, the Israeli side is said to have ensured that the Turkish envoy was photographed sitting on a lower chair than the Israeli official.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry statement said Turkey expects an explanation and apologies from Israel.

It is the latest incident indicating tensions between the two regional allies since Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip last year.
