MOSCOW -- Russian and U.S. officials have reached a preliminary agreement on a joint investigation into the unsolved murder of American journalist Paul Klebnikov in 2004, RFE/RL's Russian Service reported.

Klebnikov was editor in chief of the Russian edition of "Forbes" magazine when he was gunned down in downtown Moscow.

His brother, Peter Klebnikov, told journalists on July 7 that Russia's prosecutor-general had made reference to U.S. officials and a request for assistance in investigating the murder.

He also said family members are still hoping that his brother's killers and presumed organizers of the slaying will be found.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
