DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine -- A U.S. citizen has been detained by customs officers in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk for allegedly smuggling Apple iPad computers into the country, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
The Kharkiv border guard's press office said on July 19 that customs officers at Dnipropetrovsk airport confiscated 22 new iPads, a tablet computer, from a 50-year-old American citizen on July 17.
The suspect, who had flown to Ukraine from Vienna, told customs officers he had nothing to declare. But during a search of his luggage officials say they found 22 iPads, which were confiscated.
Customs officials said the iPads were worth about $22,500.
An investigation is under way.
