Known as "Mother" to many patients, Laila Haidari runs Kabul's Mother Recovery Center, which has been set up to help and treat addicted and homeless youths in the Afghan capital. Haidari also runs a nonprofit restaurant that gives recovering addicts jobs as they seek to rebuild their lives. Although heroin and other opiates remain common problems in Afghanistan, there are relatively few treatment programs like this one. In Afghan society, drug addiction carries a heavy stigma, especially for female users.
