Former Armenian President Has Cancer Surgery

Former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrossian has undergone surgery for intestinal cancer in the United States.

Ter-Petrossian's office said the surgery took place at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California on January 15.

According to his office, Ter-Petrossian was discharged from the medical institution on January 24 and is currently recuperating in the United States.

Ter-Petrossian, 71, was Armenia's first president from 1991-1998.

Ter-Petrossian led the opposition Armenian National Congress party after unsuccessfully running for president in 2008.

He declined to run again in the 2013 presidential poll, citing his age.
