Scores of people have rallied in the center of Armenia's capital, Yerevan, to mark the first anniversary since the leader of the nationalist Tsegakron party and supporters were arrested.

The demonstrators gathered on Liberty Square late on November 5 to demand the release of activist leader Shant Harutiunian and 11 other activists.

Police reportedly detained eight participants.

Harutiunian and the activists were sentenced to up to seven years in prison last month for acts of hooliganism.

Party activists clashed with police in Yerevan in November 2013 while trying to march to the presidential office building.

Dozens were injured, including four police.

The lawyers of the group said they would appeal the verdicts.
