European Union President Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday wished Italy to remain united "forever," in one of his cutomary haiku poems published as the country celebrated the 150th anniversary of its unification.
"From the multitudes to unity / After a century-long journey / Together forever," Van Rompuy wrote on his twitter account.
Van Rompuy, a Belgian, wrote in Italian.
Haikus are traditional short Japanese poems. Van Rompuy is an avid amateur fan, and has even published a collection of his literary efforts.
