Reports from Afghanistan say three people, including at least one policewomen, have been killed by a remote-controlled mine that blew up the vehicle taking them to work at an airport in the west of the country.

Officials said 10 people were also wounded in the blast, including police officers and civilians, near the civilian airport serving the city of Herat.

The deaths come the day after five NATO soldiers died across Afghanistan. In a report released on September 28, the United Nations said violent incidents in the Afghan war had increased nearly 40 percent in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year.

In response, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it found the figures "inconsistent with the data that we have collected."
