The Week Ahead is a detailed listing of key events of the coming week affecting RFE/RL's broadcast region.


MONDAY, September 6:


Armenia/Azerbaijan: The co-chairs travel to Baku, Yerevan, and Nagorno-Karabakh to discuss additional actions necessary to strengthen the cease-fire, to promote a spirit of compromise by all parties, and to finalize modalities for further action (to September 10).

Kazakhstan: Seventh Forum of interregional cooperation of Russia and Kazakhstan opens in Oskemen, Kazakhstan (September 7).

Kazakhstan: UN Special Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik visits Kazakhstan to examine and report on the realization of the right to adequate housing and other rights (to September 13).

Russia: Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak visits Moscow to hold talks with senior Russian officials.

Ukraine: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko attends a conference organized by Chatham House to discuss the foreign-policy priorities of the new Ukrainian administration.

TUESDAY, September 7:

Georgia: Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and former U.S Defense Secretary William Perry arrive in Georgia for a symposium entitled “Global Challenges in the Post-Perestroika World.”


Russia: U.S. State Department Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns visits Moscow to review key issues on the bilateral and international agenda, and discuss future projects under the Obama-Medvedev Bilateral Presidential Commission (to September 8).

Serbia: Serbia's President Boris Tadic meets EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton in Brussels.

Ukraine: The opposition plans to hold a protest demonstration outside the Ukrainian parliament.

WEDNESDAY, September 8:

Azerbaijan: U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Tina Kaidanow visits Baku.

Ukraine: U.S. State Department Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns visits Kyiv (to September 10).


THURSDAY, September 9:

Kazakhstan: Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) states hold Peace Mission 2010 military exercises. The drill, hosted by Kazakhstan on their Matybulak air base, will include contingents from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. India, Pakistan, and Iran have observer status with the SCO and will most likely send observers as well (to September 25).

Russia: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hosts a Global Policy Forum in Yaroslavl, Russia (to September 10).

Russia/South Korea: South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visits Russia to hold a summit with President Dmitry Medvedev and attend an international conference in Yaroslavl (to September 10).

Serbia: UN holds a debate on Serbia's draft resolution on Kosovo.

Tajikistan: Tajikistan marks its independence day.



FRIDAY, September 10:

World: World Suicide Prevention Day.

World: The Riga Conference 2010 aims to kick off high-level international discussions on foreign and security policy issues.

SATURDAY, September 11:

Armenia: NATO and partner countries take part in an exercise to be held in Armenia by NATO's Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center (to September 17).
