Iranians went to the polls on June 16 in the country's first presidential vote since the disputed 2009 election that saw Mahmud Ahmadinejad reelected for a second and final term. RFE/RL editors and the team at Radio Farda will provide updates throughout the day and night on the vote, letting you know what's at stake and what comes next for Iran.

Head of Iran's police force, Brigadier General Esma'il Ahmadi-Moqaddam, tells "Fars" that the vote is "running smoothly" in the country.

"From the early hours of voting, people participated enthusiastically with discipline and calm and no worrisome issues have been reported," Fars quoted Ahmadi-Moqaddam as saying.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian police chief said security had been tightened in border regions on election day and that Iran's border with Iraq had been closed because, "in the opinion of the police, commuting across the border with Iraq would not be problematic."

Human Rights Watch Iran researcher Faraz Sanei reacts to Iran's vote in an email to RFE/RL:

"Four years ago the violent crackdown on peaceful protests that followed the presidential election exposed the authoritarian nature of those who hold power in Tehran. Today, regardless of who becomes the country's next president, one thing is clear: the legacy of unfair elections, highlighted by the arbitrary disqualification of opposition figures, detention of government critics, and heavy media censorship continues to deprive Iranians of the right to shape their country's future."
