ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- More than 100 people have been arrested in Almaty after clashing with police and Interior Ministry forces on May 1-2 in a land dispute, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
On May 1, local residents began dividing up vacant land in the Duman-1 and Duman-2 areas into building plots near apartments they currently rent with the aim of building private homes.
Almaty city authorities warned them that their actions were illegal.
When they refused to stop dividing up the land, officials called on Interior Ministry troops to intervene.
Those arrested have been charged with the illegal seizure of land.
