The chief of the detention center of the Kyrgyz State Committee of National Security (UKMK) has been dismissed amid reports of alleged extortion in the facility.
The UKMK's press service confirmed to RFE/RL that Mirbek Mukanbetov and the detention center's top official responsible for the inmates' medical treatment have been dismissed.
No reasons have been given.
Meanwhile, Kyrgyz Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun says an inmate at the facility, former Bishkek Mayor Nariman Tuleev, has been on a hunger strike since February 15 claiming the detention center's officials requested $50,000 before they would allow him to get medical treatment outside the facility.
Tuleev, a parliamentary deputy, has been diagnosed with cancer.
In June 2012, he was arrested and charged with corruption and financial mismanagement while serving as Bishkek mayor.
