Kyrgyz Woman Arrested For Heroin Smuggling

OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- Police in southern Kyrgyzstan have arrested a woman who allegedly tried to smuggle heroin to Russia, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Kyrgyz Customs Service spokesperson Abdylda Maldybaev told RFE/RL that Elvira Duishonaly-kyzy, 31, was on board the Osh-Moscow train on March 6 when customs officers found 5.47 kilograms of pure heroin in her luggage.

Maldybaev said the street value of that amount of heroin in Moscow is at least $100,000.

The woman was arrested and an investigation opened.

Russia is a key transit country for the smuggling of illegal drugs from Afghanistan via Central Asia to Europe.
