BOKONBAEV, Kyrgyzstan -- Teachers at three secondary schools in Kyrgyzstan's northern Tong district have resumed their strike for better pay, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
One of those on strike, Liliya Sopieva, told RFE/RL today that teachers at several other secondary schools in the region were expected to join the walkout.
She said the teachers resumed their strike on January 10 after the local and central governments failed to fulfill promises they gave last month.
In December, teachers in several regions of Kyrgyzstan went on strike to demand a pay rise.
The government promised a 30 percent increase as of January 1. Earlier this month, the government announced that the increase would take effect only as of February 1.
The striking teachers are protesting the postponement. They also say a 30 percent increase is not enough.
