From our news desk:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Kyiv's offer of dialogue with pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine is "a step in the right direction, albeit very belated."

Lavrov, speaking on a visit to Beijing on April 15, said it is "unacceptable" to use force to resolve the crisis in eastern Ukraine, where separatists have seized government buildings in at least 10 towns.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said security forces overnight on April 15 launched an "antiterrorist operation" in Donetsk region.

Turchynov accused Russia of harboring "brutal plans" to destabilize Ukraine's southeast.

U.S. President Barack Obama, in a telephone conversation on April 14, urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to use his influence to make separatists in eastern Ukraine stand down.

Russia denies any involvement in the unrest.

Disturbing news about brutal attacks on pro-Russian politicians:
Two pro-Russian politicians have been attacked in the Ukrainian capital as tensions grow over unrest in the country’s eastern regions.

The press service of Oleh Tsaryov, a lawmaker from the ruling Party of Regions and a presidential candidate, saidsaid on April 15 that he had been beaten by pro-Ukrainian activists.

It said the incident took place overnight overnight near a television station headquarters, where he was expected to take part in a live TV program.

In a separate attack late on April 14 at the same place, another member of the Party of Regions and presidential hopeful, Mykhaylo Dobkin, was sprayed with a green disinfectant and had flour thrown at him.

The presidential election is scheduled for May 25.

There is a video of Tsaryov talking about the incident and one apparently showing the attack taking place.
