Voters lined up in the Moldovan village of Peresecina on October 30 to cast their ballots in the country's pivotal presidential election, the first nationwide vote by the people for that post in 20 years. High voter interest was also obvious in the village of Varnita, situated near the Russian-speaking territory of Transdniester, which broke away from Moldova in 1992. The election is seen as a battle between those supporting the post-Soviet country's integration with the European Union and those wanting closer ties with Russia. (RFE/RL's Moldovan Service)
