Moldovan Prisoner Given Additional Sentence 'For Biting Guard'

CHISINAU -- A young Moldovan woman prisoner has been sentenced to an extra four years and eight months in prison for resisting a search and biting the guard who attempted to perform it, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports

Moldovan prosecutors said in a press release today that the 28 year-old woman was HIV-positive, and the bite was categorized as a deliberate attempt to infect the guard with the virus.

The statement on the prosecutor's office website says the woman also refused to surrender to the guard unspecified "illegal objects" found in her possession.

The woman was originally sentenced for theft and drug-dealing, and was due to be released in June, according to the press statement, which bears the headline: "One step to freedom, sentenced again."
