Muhammad Ali, the heavyweight champion whose skill, politics, and personality made him one of the most famous sportsmen ever, has died. He was 74, and suffered for years from Parkinson's disease. Many will remember him for his brash appearances when he burst onto the stage as a young boxer in the 1960s, including a chaotic news conference after stunning Sonny Liston to become world champion in 1964. He will also be remembered for his often controversial political stances, from his evading the U.S. military draft as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, to supporting the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
