A roadside bomb blast killed at least 12 people, including 11 police officers, on May 23 in southwestern Pakistan, where separatist rebels have for decades been battling to control the region's natural gas and other resources. Police said the bomb targeted a vehicle carrying members of the police's special forces. Quetta is the capital of southwestern Balochistan Province, which is a stronghold for a variety of violent militants. (Reuters)
