A plane carrying 82 passengers and crew has skidded down the runway at Kyrgyzstan's southern Osh airport, breaking off a wing and catching fire.

Passengers and crew were quickly evacuated from the plane.

The doctor in charge at the Osh regional hospital, Abdyjalil Muratov, said 31 people were injured and that 17 of them were hospitalized, none with life-threatening injuries.

The Tu-134 plane was flying from the capital, Bishkek.

The cause of the incident was under investigation.

Airport officials said weather conditions may have played a role, as visibility was limited by fog.

The Osh airport was temporarily closed following the incident.
