Poland's First Openly Gay Mayor: Country 'Ready For Change'
Robert Biedron, the first openly gay mayor of a Polish city, was sworn in to his new position this week in the town of Slupsk. Biedron earlier broke new ground in Polish politics when he became the first openly gay member of parliament in 2011. This autumn, while still serving in parliament, Biedron spoke to Alexandru Eftode of RFE/RL's Moldovan Service about what he sees as the steadily growing acceptance of gay rights by Polish society. But that change, Biedron says, is not reflected in the country's conservative politics.
