Pro-Russian Protests Appear in Strategic Towns in Ukraine's South And East

Ukrainian and U.S. officials have accused Moscow of orchestrating pro-Russian protests in eastern Ukraine. They point to the strategic location of many of the towns and cities seized by protesters as evidence that the events have not been spontaneous uprisings. The map below shows that most of the cities separatists have occupied or attempted to occupy are along a North-South Railroad route between Mariupol and Kharkiv or along a train route from the border with Russia to Kyiv.
