Russia has expelled a Canadian diplomat in retaliation for Canada's expulsion of an aide to Russia's defense attache in Ottawa earlier this month.
Moscow announced on April 22 that Canadian Embassy First Secretary Margarita Atanasov had been given two weeks to leave the country.
Canada also recently expelled nine Russian military officers after suspending joint military training as part of Ottawa's sanctions over Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea.
