Friends and colleagues of slain Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov gathered at the site of his killing in Moscow on what would have been his 58th birthday on October 9. Supporters released 58 white balloons in honor of the politician, who was shot on a bridge near the Kremlin on February 27, 2015. Nemtsov served as a lawmaker and a deputy prime minister, and was a longtime critic of President Vladimir Putin. Five Chechens were convicted of the killing in July, but many of Nemtsov's associates believe the assassination was ordered at a higher level and that those responsible have not yet been prosecuted.
