NOVGOROD, Russia -- The Russian Prosecutor-General's Office has launched a criminal case against a Novgorod City Duma deputy for extortion, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Lyudmila Sergeyeva, the spokeswoman for the Prosecutor-General's Office's Investigative Committee in the northwestern Russian region of Novgorod, told RFE/RL that City Duma Deputy Andrei Moiseyev was caught while allegedly receiving money from the head of a local construction company in his car on December 6.
Sergeyeva said Moiseyev had been extorting money from construction company officials since September.
An investigation is under way.
