French President Nicolas Sarkozy says the Group of 20 leading and emerging economies must play a role in stimulating global economic growth.

On a visit to China on August 25, Sarkozy also said that Beijing plays an essential role in the effort.

China has invested an increasing portion of its huge foreign currency reserves in euro-dominated assets, and China's state-run media have repeatedly called for concrete actions to restore market confidence in eurozone nations and the euro.

Sarkozy met with Chinese President Hu Jintao on a brief stopover in Beijing before heading on to France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia.

France is to chair a meeting of G7 finance ministers in Marseille on Sept. 9-10 to discuss the global economy, followed by a gathering of G20 finance ministers in Paris in October.
