The gunman who shot dead six people at a Sikh Temple in the U.S. state of Wisconsin has been identified as a former U.S. serviceman with possible links to racist groups.

The Pentagon confirmed that 40-year-old Wade Michael Page was a former U.S. Army psychological-operations specialist who served in the military from 1992 to 1998.

The shooting happened as several dozen people gathered for Sunday services at the Sikh temple in the town of Oak Creek.

Beside the six people killed, Page also wounded three others, one of them a police officer.

Police shot Page dead.

Reuters news agency reported that Page has been a member of a skinhead group in North Carolina in recent years.

President Barack Obama said he was "deeply saddened" by the shooting, which comes just over two weeks after a gun massacre left 12 dead at a Colorado cinema.
