Mudslides In Tajikistan Kill At Least Seven

DUSHANBE -- Mudslides and floods caused by melting glaciers have killed at least seven people in Tajikistan's eastern region of Gorno-Badakhshan over the last few days.

A spokeswoman for the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region's administration, Nilufar Aslamshoeva, told RFE/RL on July 21 that Deputy Prime Minister Azim Ibrohim and regional Governor Shodikhon Jamshed were visiting the Vanch district, where mudslides and floods have destroyed some 70 houses and damaged buildings, electricity lines, and irrigation canals.

Operations at two power plants have been suspended.

The families whose houses have been destroyed were moved to a temporary tented camp.

Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda said on July 20 that the damages caused by the mudslides and floods were estimated at $50 million.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
