DUSHANBE -- Two suspects in the high-profile killing of a top security official have gone on trial in Tajikistan's restive Gorno-Badakhshan region.

Supreme Court judge Mirzoali Karimov confirmed to RFE/RL that the trial started on February 19 in the southeastern province's capital, Khorugh.

The sessions are being held behind closed doors.

The suspects are accused of killing regional security chief Abdullo Nazarov last summer.

It's not clear why Nazarov was killed.

The two men surrendered after Tajik government forces conducted a military operation against their armed supporters following Nazarov's killing.

The authorities say 13 security officers and 30 militants were killed in the operation, which lasted for several weeks.

However, local citizens say that at least 70 people, including unarmed local citizens, lost their lives during the operation.
